I didn't keep a log on this trip for a few reasons. For one, days were way far too relaxed to make the effort to hold a pencil. Also, since we were carrying most of our personal gear in the kayaks, there was no space for extra items. So, having returned late last night, I'll write up some of the things I remember... I would like to think of this trip as an annual affair -- this was the second time there, two years after I went there with Mike and Jake in 1999 (read about it here). The Verde River usually has a very low volume, and peaks for a few weeks in the spring, when the snows above Flagstaff melt. For that time sections of it become exciting class III whitewater, and others are just pleasant class II to float, meandering between desert buttes and saguaro cactus. CONTENTS:
Start: Salida to Camp Verde, selling
the kayak in Pagosa Springs. If you don't want to read through my notes, just look at the pictures. Also, take a look at Dave's pictures. |
As you can see from the chart below, the spring run-off doesn't last too long. We missed the 1,500-2,000 cfs (cubic feet of water per second) days on 13-16 of March, and enjoyed the 700-800 cfs days on 20-25 of March.
